Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get more details about a licensed product?
How do I obtain one of the licensed products?

Go to the Software List and click on the product for more information. Then click on the order form, fill it out, including the account number to charge. If there is no detailed information or order form for the product you want, please use the Inquiry Form.

We will contact you when we have processed your order and you may pick up a copy of the software from our office. Generally, you are buying a license only, and we will loan you the media to install the software.

When do you decide to license something?

Our Software Licensing Office becomes involved in negotiating campus licenses when there is a high and broad level of interest in a particular software product. In addition, we must be able to secure pricing that is significantly lower than campus clients could get on their own.

If you know of a product that you think may fall into this category, please contact us. Any research you do in advance is helpful, including finding out if others on campus share your interest in the product.

Where can students buy software?

We are continually working on offering more software titles to students. See our student order form for a complete current list. After we receive your order, we will contact you for pick up arrangements. You will be charged on your IT Services bill. Essential Stanford Software is available at no charge, and may be picked up from the Software Licensing office, or downloaded from the ESS web site.

If we don't have the software you want, contact the Stanford Bookstore for academic pricing on many products. Also, note that much of the software we license is available for students to use in public computer clusters at Meyer Library, Sweet Hall, Tresidder, Terman Engineering, and the residences.

Can software be installed on home machines and laptops, or overseas?

It depends on the terms of the license agreement. Each one is unique, so please check with us.

How do I find out the software available for use on campus?

For a list of software available for use on the Sweet Hall Unix Systems, please go here.
